We regularly invite into school expert specialists, who are typically also advisers to the Herne Hill School, to conduct workshops with the children and carry out subject-specific training for our staff. Below is more information on the three most recent workshops.
Outdoor learning workshops with Jon Cree (October 2021)
As a Founding Director of the Forest School Association, Jon Cree has for many years been an internationally recognised leader in nature-based training and education. He has just (2021) released his most recent book, ‘The Essential Guide to Forest School and Nature Pedagogy‘, a comprehensive tome of wisdom on outdoor learning co-authored with Marina Robb. At Herne Hill School, we feel privileged to have enjoyed Jon’s friendship and consulting advice for several years. Most recently, he visited for staff training and workshops in our woodland area with all classes from Pre-Reception to Year 2 for two full days in October 2021. The short video below captures some insights into that visit.
Body percussion workshops with Ollie Tunmer (September 2021)
On a Wednesday in September 2021, all children from Pre-Reception through Year 2 participated in fantastic body percussion workshops in our Oak hall. We are grateful to Ollie Tunmer, the Director of ‘Beat Goes On’, to have come personally for an entire day to give the children wonderful experiences to develop their attention, coordination, rhythmic and mental skills in a hugely fun manner. We know that this is precisely the kind of activity that helps them develop their all important executive function skills. We are already looking forward to summer 2022, when Ollie will return to take the children’s body percussion performances to an even higher level, building on the foundations he laid with them and the ‘homework’ exercises he left with our teachers for them to practice with the children in the meantime. The short video below captures some insights into the workshops and the progression through our Reception Cycle and Key Stage 1.
Storytelling with Neil Griffiths (June 2021)
Neil Griffiths is a former Head Teacher and an extremely talented author of over thirty children’s books. All his books feature strong storylines, memorable characters, enchanting language and arresting illustrations. They charm children and have sold in the thousands. He is also an exceptional storyteller who inspires a love of reading in young children. At Herne Hill School, we are proud to be able to say that Neil has become a true friend and regularly visits us – most recently in June 2021 for an entire day of storytelling workshops from Pre-Reception to Year 2. As usual, Neil inspired everyone – children and staff alike – with his infectious enthusiasm for reading and storytelling. He also recorded a special video message for our parents with this top three tips on helping turn young children into book loving readers. We thought that, as a prospective parent, you too might enjoy watching Neil’s video.
